It's Halloweek, so you know what that means: frickin' bats! The Bureau of Land Management is hosting its fifth-annual bat beauty contest in celebration of Bat Week. The contest aims to eliminate harmful misconceptions about the nocturnal creatures and boost awareness of their ecological importance. Pictured above is "Honey Bunches of MyOtis" from Oregon, who is battling it out this week against Hoary Potter, also from Oregan (pictured below). As most of you know, Twyla the Turtle is an esteemed resident at Peckerwood Manor, known for her ribald conversations and delicious Atlanta Sours, which she makes with her own corn whisky from her own personal distillery. She's also just opened a sure-to-be-famous turtle spa, and while only Twyla and Tequila partake of its splendors at the moment, word has begun spreading. Turtles from parts near and far, we've heard, have already started their (very) slow trek toward our parts to enjoy its hot springs, massages, and reviving, minty scrub downs (as demonstrated by Miss Twyla above).  In practical terms, this means that by this time next year - or maybe after, as they're quite leisurely in their travel - we'll all have to be on the look-out, whether we be moving around on foot, bicycle or car. OPEN POST: Dance Party of 1518 "And they danced themselves to death"

The Dancing Plague of 1518 is a historical event that makes you question your life choices and why you can't be a fabulously fantastic Dancing Queen. It all started in Strasbourg, part of the Holy Roman Empire back then—imagine a lousy reality show set in medieval Europe. On July 14, Frau Troffea decided it was a great day for a dance-off, and she took “dancing like nobody’s watching” to whole new levels. She danced for hours, briefly pausing only to wonder if she might have made a poor life choice. Soon enough, she was joined by over 30 others who apparently decided that following a woman down the street for hours on end was the norm. By August, they had formed a rather unconventional dance crew of around 400. These dancers were a sight to behold, moving like contestants on a game show where the prize was complete exhaustion.
