OPEN POST: The Myth of the Meteorologist

A rant.

"I wish I had a job where I could be wrong all the time!"

Actually, meteorologists are right far more than they're wrong. You just only care when you think they're wrong.

Suck on that accuracy. Source: NOAA

A big part of the problem is that a weather forecast is over an area, and usually includes percentages and probabilities. So when there's a 20% chance of snow, the people who get a few inches of snow bitch that there was "only" a 20% chance and all the people who don't want to know where the hell the snow is.

At the end of the day, telling the future for a living is actually really hard. And for every person who calls to thank you for saving their life by predicting that white out snowstorm on the highway before they drove or that tornado that destroyed their home but they were safe in their shelter due to your warning, there are approximately 4,382 calls about how much you suck at your job, you deserve to be fired because you said there'd be 4 inches of snow and they only got 3 inches, they can't believe their tax dollars pay for you to be wrong all the time, how can they trust anything you ever say, etc.

You know what, Chad? Compare my forecast to your March Madness bracket, and we'll see who's better at predicting the future.
