OPEN POST: The Psychology of Generation X (1965-1980):The Forgotten Feral Generation? What Do You Think?

I am at the end range of Xennials (1977-1984), which means I experienced a mix of Generation X and Millennial (1981-1986) years, and I definitely have some characteristics of both. I am a hybrid. I am like an X-er because I do remember playing outside in the analog years. I remember freedom, boredom, call waiting, no digital world, toughing it out, being independent, self-reliant, non-conformist, and prize individuality.

I have no respect for corporations, and I don't expect special treatment or trophies for just being me. But I am like a Millennial in that I place a high value on experiences over material things, I am optimistic, social, fiscally cautious, like being in mentorships and fostering community workplace atmospheres, and driven by values such as sustainability, transparency, work/life balance, and social responsibility. My parents were very involved with me, cared a lot about my inner world, and I wasn't a latchkey kid.

Generation X is often referred to as The Forgotten Generation, but that fits because the Xer mentality is don't look at me anyway. Move it along, nothing to see, what you lookin' at, Willis, and it's none of your business. Don't you be bothering me, and I won't be bothering you. I understand it and respect it.

Many of the closest people in my life fall into the X birth years, and there is a reason the woman I call the Dragon Lady, the gatekeeper, manager, supervisor, pain bringer, who works for my company, is my best hire to date. No, she is one of the best things on the planet. She is an Xer through and through. Bitch gets shit done, doesn't require hand holding, works hard, and she is my magical force field against day-to-day BS and people that I don't need to deal with. I trust her judgement. She sees everything, knows what is going on, puts out fires so I don't have to, she communicates clearly, and has no patience for excuses or unreasonable fragility, even in herself. I would marry her if bigamy weren't a crime. Last week, I had a past-due client, and without me asking her, she took care of it, and I got my money. Kind of mafiosa and 100 percent badass.

If you are Gen X, what do you think shaped you? If you aren't, what are your honest opinions about them?
