Peckerwood Manor

  In a twist of events that could only be described as a scene straight out of a comedy film, a group of wild monkeys decided to take their grocery shopping into their own paws. On September 16, in Krabi province, Thailand, these audacious primates strayed from their usual diet of forest delicacies to raid a local 7-11 supermarket.  The monkeys, clearly having watched too many heist movies, executed their plan with a level of organization that would put professional thieves to shame. They were seen on video, captured by a bystander who was probably questioning the reality of the situation, systematically uncovering and ransacking plastic crates filled with bananas. One by one, they would pull back the covers, grab their loot, and then scamper away, only for the next monkey to take its turn.  The supermarket staff, who probably never expected "monkey wrangling" to be part of their job description, tried in vain to chase the monkeys away. These monkeys are called Golden Langurs, found in Buhtan, and rarely seen because they don't like people. You can tell by their expression that they are so over it and over being photographed. What made them stand out for me was how human they looked. And some get offended when scientists say we are close relatives. Ha! Those eyes have seen some things and look like some world weary old dude who became a hermit because people got on his nerves.
