OPEN POST: The Great Zebra Escape
In late April 2024, the small town of North Bend, Washington, became the center of an unexpected and amusing saga when four zebras escaped from a trailer on Interstate 90. The incident captivated the local community and sparked a wave of humor and creativity across social media. Here's a detailed account of the escape, the search efforts, and the hilarious memes that emerged.
Escape:
On April 28, 2024, Kristine Keltgen was transporting four zebras from a farm in Washington to her petting zoo in Montana. The zebras escaped when the latch on the trailer's doors came undone while traveling east on Interstate 90. Keltgen stopped to secure the trailer, but the zebras took the opportunity to flee and do a little sightseeing.
The getaway led to a community effort to prevent the wanderlusting zebras from meandering into traffic. Local residents and passing motorists helped corral the animals, with some using their vehicles to create makeshift barriers. Three less-than-intrepid zebras were recaptured within a few hours, but one unique badass woman of the world, a mare named Shug, managed to evade capture and disappeared into the mist.
Evasion:
Shug's ability to circumvent capture for nearly a week was due to several factors. Zebras have evolved to evade predators, and their natural instincts likely helped Shug avoid capture. The foothills of the Cascades provided dense and varied terrain that made it challenging for search teams to locate and capture the wily zebra. Shug moved frequently and unpredictably, often spotted in one location only to leg it before capture teams arrived.
Despite numerous sightings and using infrared drones and search-and-rescue dogs, capturing Shug proved challenging. The search involved closing key access points along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail and using various methods to track the zebra.
Memes:
The escape of the zebras inspired a wave of creativity across social media. One of the most popular memes imagines Shug forming a friendship with Sasquatch, with the two roaming the Pacific Northwest together. Some depicted Shug visiting various local establishments and engaging in everyday activities, such as grabbing a burger from Dick's Drive-In, riding a ferry in Puget Sound or playing baseball at T-Mobile Park. They veered into the absurd with Shug tossing fish at Pike Place Market, testing out the Bike Park and disc golf course at Stevens Pass, or participating in a merry-go-round ride at a local park.
Capture and Freedom Thwarted:
Shug was captured in the Riverbend neighborhood on May 3, 2024. The capture was facilitated by a mountain bike lookout and a package of white bread, which lured the zebra into a secure area. Shug appeared in good condition following her rescue and was transported back to Montana with memories of grunge, coffee, flannel, lumberjacks, baseball, and the great outdoors.
