NEW OPEN POST: Manor Music Monday With Andrea True! THE CLEAN VERSION!
Let's see if we're good this time...
That's when we'll meet a luminary who went from trained classical pianist to porn legend to unstoppable disco queen. "Scooby-wha?" you say.
There's only one Andrea True, or Andrea Marie Truden as she was first known. Back in the late-1960s and 70s, when adult movies where cultural events, Andrea was a star, baby, a star. Quite a trek for a gal who traveled from a strict Catholic upbringing in Tennessee to New York City, where she hoped to become an actress. And what happened? Meh, she didn't quite set the town on fire. She found a little extra work here and there (in "The Way We Were" and "40 Carets," amongst other films), and given her training as a classical pianist, composed music for TV and radio commercials and sang in various clubs around town. But when she hit the adult scene - ka-boom! - the world was hers.
Yet this wasn't her end game. You see, Andrea was quite the canny businessperson - and multi-talented, to boot. In 1976, having socked away money from her porn shoots, and briefly stalled in Jamaica, she co-wrote and recorded a demo, the disco smash "More, More, More," which later peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, record company wariness about her porn movie past, then vocal surgery in 1980, ended her pop career. Still, her songs are remarkably accomplished, and, yes, they really do stand the test of time.
Andrea made considerable bank on song residuals for "More, More, More" and continued her life as a substance abuse counselor and a much in-demand astrologer. Whoever she left the rights to for her music, they're making bank, as well, because "More, More, More" has been sampled and used in several hit songs (most notably Len's "Steal My Sunshine"), movies (recently in "Minions, The Rise of Gru") and TV shows. And who can forget that "Honey Bunches of O's" TV commercial? Adult movie's loss was disco's gain was a breakfast cereal's memorable jingle. You can also hear the song in recent commercials for "Target" and "Applebee's." This list is ongoing.
In her final years, after a brief marriage, Andrea lived in Woodstock, New York with fellow adult actress and best friend, Valerie Marron, and passed in 2011 at age 68. Though Andrea was proud of her work in music, she wasn't thrilled by the business, to put it mildly. Her records sold as well as, or better, than many pop acts in her day, but no major label would touch her. Yet in many ways, Andrea had the last laugh, or at least a more lucrative laugh than many so-called one-hit-wonders, since "More, More, More" was not just a hit, it was a phenomenon whose afterlife continues to this day. Here's more from Andrea's first album, so get out your gold lame dresses and polyester shirts and have a good stash of booger-sugar and 'ludes, 'cause we're goin' dancin'.
