COMING SOON! Raincoaster's Klassy Manor Movie Night with "Lisa and the Devil!"

Image
Mark your calanders, movie hors, for Friday, March 28th, because our very own Raincoaster is hosting another Klassy Manor Movie Night - and this time she's picked a doozy! Think of it: Telly Savalas, of "Kojak" and lollipop-slurping fame, together at last with the scintillating Elke Sommer in a 1973 gothic horror movie directed by Mario Bava, an Italian filmmaker whose credo was surely "More-more-more," as in more beauty, more blood, more shivery thrills. How can you resist? Did you know? When Mario started out making the movie, he firmly believed he could create anything he wanted - only to have his finished work cruelly ripped from his hands and radically re-cut into a wan "Exorcist" knock-off. Happily, his original, dream-like vision has been restored and that's what Raincoaster will be presenting for us. Has this version since become a cult hit? Of course it has. Famous fans include directors Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton, as well a...

OPEN POST: How To Enter The Club On Hump Day!

Image
Fosse. Hot-cha! Jazz hands. Is there a better way to welcome Hump Day? "Sweet Charity" (1969) may be one of Bob Fosse's more uneven movies as a director, but as a choreographer, it has some of his most irresistible dance numbers.  When I first watched it as a child on TV, probably on "The Late Late Show," I was spellbound by the numbers at the club. This, I thought, is what it really means to be a grown up. This is what it's like when you go out on the town. And yes, I later tried to perform some of the numbers in the living room, which, let me tell you, had my older sister chuckling for days. If anyone knows of a club like the one in "Sweet Charity," call me immediately.

EVENING NIGHTCAP: Happy Gilmore 2 Trailer. Sorry Chet...Tammy Did It Better. I Heart Radio Awards Fashuuun.

Image
► Almost 30 years since the original Happy Gilmore was released, Adam Sandler is taking a cloth to his golf clubs for Happy Gilmore 2. The movie released a trailer and the from the looks of it, Adam seems to be sleepwalking his way around the screen for 1:46 minutes. Plot details haven't been shared (not a good sign). I'm going to take a guess and fill in the holes based on the snoozefest trailer: The city is threatening to raze grandma's house make way for gentrification of the neighborhood. Developers want to put a mix-retail space on grandma's lot that will have a kombucha bar, an Equinox Fitness Club that cost $10,000 to join, a LeCruset shop, and milllion dollar condos on the top floors. This forces Happy to come out of retirement and get back in the game. He struggles to get his golfing mojo back. Along the way, he gets a pep talk from the ghosts of past PGA legends. Happy wins the Master's Tournament and saves grandma's house and the neighborhood. The e...

Who's Who In Our New Peckerwood Header Picture?

Image
Don't you love our fancy new Header? And it's all due to Kombitcha and her artistry, and to Tooncicle's incomparable layout - complete with festive dots! But many of you are confused. "Harpo, who's that woman?" you're asking as you point to various figures. While I can definitely identify a few, even I'm at a loss for the rest.  Kombitcha's artwork, as you may recall, was originally created to accompany her delightful, two-part " Tales of Peckerwood Manor ." But that was so many months ago and we can't be expected to remember everything, right? Luckily, Kombitcha is here to help. She kindly supplied a picture key, so now all can be told.  Please do not be offended if you weren't included in the picture. Kombitcha created this in her spare time, dont'cha know, and was mostly including those that were featured prominently in the "Tales" episodes. Who knows, maybe she'll create a new one some day and you'll be i...

OPEN POST: Hungover Today?

Image
The older I get the less I want to go outside of my home. So naturally Saint Patrick's Day has fallen to the wayside as I can't imagine braving the crowds at the pubs like I used to do in my undergrad days. That said, many friends and coworkers did celebrate the holiday and might just be feeling under the weather today. So if that's you, here's a nice crisp glass of Alka-Seltzer to help you perk up. Cheers!

EVENING NIGHTCAP: YG3 + A Script Idea= GOLD! Bye-Buh Forever 21.

Image
► It's been almost 40 years since Young Buns Guns made its big screen debut. It ushered the era of studly 1980s  mall rats dashing to Thom McKan's to buy cowboy boots and Miller's Outpost for Wranglers. Well, if you were wondering when Hollywood would get around to dusting off the cobwebs from the YG franchise, the wait is over.  Emilio Estevez (who portrayed Bill The Kid) announced that YG3: Dead Or Alive is in the works. Emilio was visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico for a Film & Media Day and yapped about the original movie and the sequel being filmed in the state. He then announced YG3 was in the works. Emilio mentioned that Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater (who was in the sequel) have cleared their day timers of dinner theater commitments at Old County Buffets and are ready to don their chaps and spurs. Emilio mentioned  he will be directing and co-writing the script. While he didn't give details about the plot or when filming will begin, he did...

OPEN POST: Manor Music Monday With The Awesome Alberta Hunter!

Image
Welcome music-loving hors to DJ Li'l Scratch's favorite place to jam, the Manor's exclusive "Jenny Talia Lounge." Tonight, Li'l Scratch will be spinning tunes from a jazz master who's always made me smile, and who's the very model of perseverance and sass.  She sang for thirty long years...stopped...worked as a nurse...then twenty years later, in a jaw-dropping comeback, sang again. In a nutshell, that was the career trajectory of Alberta Hunter, whose career spanned from 1921 to the year she died, 1984, at age eighty-nine. As a child, she worked as a servant girl in a brothel. As a teenager, she took off for Chicago to make it as a singer. Her first gig? At a mob-owned bordello and speakeasy. I kid you not. Legend has it that when a mobster was shot dead one night, his body landed right on the stage before her. And she kept on singing. Word spread fast. No more bordellos for Miss Alberta. She was soon playing the best clubs, touring Europe, conquering...
