EVENING NIGHTCAP: Noooo...Not Spaceballs! Royal Ascot Fashuuun. Gayle Defends Justin.

Image
►One of the funniest comedies of the 1980's had to be "Spaceballs".  It came out in 1987 and it was a spoof of Star Wars. The movie starred John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, and Mel Brooks (Mel also directed it).  What I liked about it was the deadpan humor and the hilarious reinterpretation of Star Wars. Well, say goodbye to your fond memories of this beloved movie as it was announced today the greedy mofos at Amazon MGM Studios are making a sequel/reboot/rehash.  It will star Josh Gad and will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (who directed "Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar").  Mel Brooks (who's 97) will be serving as producer/consultant. Ugh, just leave this gem of a movie alone.  Read More L to R:  Josh Gad, Mel Brooks, and Josh Greenbaum. OPEN POST: With Victor, Victoria, Toddy, King And Norma!

Image
It's over thirty years old - can you believe? - but "Victor/Victoria," the classic musical farce by writer/director Blake Edwards, loosely based on a German comedy from the 1930s, may still be the most radical Hollywood movie to prominently feature gay characters. It's even more daring and more progressive, I'd argue, than the likes of "Brokeback Mountain" or "Call Me By Your Name." And it does it all with, as they say, a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants. Some stunt! Consider the feat, a movie in which Julie Andrews, a straight woman pretending to be a gay man pretending to be a woman, attracts James Garner, a straight tough-guy who's flummoxed, then approving, when Alex Karass, his tough-guy cohort, comes out of the closet and becomes lovers with Robert Preston, a gay cabaret performer who is himself pretending to be Andrews' gay lover. And that's just the tip of the iceberg in scenario wherein not a si

EVENING NIGHTCAP: Justin Timberlake Arrested. Kate Beckinsale Doesn't Understand. Kevin Costner Nepo Kid.

Image
► I can only think of one celeb who's having a worse year than JLo and it's Justin Timberlake.  Justin's new album was a flop and his tour is about as welcomed as a cold sore (he's cancelled some tour dates). He can add getting arrested to his woes.  Justin was arrested in NYC for DWI today.  He was leaving a restaurant in the wee hours of the morning to go over to a friend's house when he was pulled over in Sag Harbor. Cops blared their sirens and threw his Ramen noodle ass in a squad car for driving while under the influence. Justin didn't want to take a breathalyzer test.  I'm disappointed in Justin's mug shot. I was expecting him to pull a sexy back "blue steel" like Dean from Supernatural. Instead he looks like a drunk uncle who crashed his kid's prom. Whoa, seriously bad bloodshot eyes.  Read More Justin Timberlake 2024 mug shot. Photo: Sag Harbor Police Dept / Deadline.com   Comment: Cry me a river you dumb ass. First of, why in t

EVENING NIGHTCAP: War Of The Roses Reboot. Tony Awards Fashuuun. Blake Shows Off New Jeans.

Image
► I must have missed the memo about the reboot/remake/rehash of the 1989 classic "War Of The Roses", which starred Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas as spouses in a messy divorce. Danny Devito directed it (and was also in it).  The 2024 reboot stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the feuding spouses. Joining them will be Kate McKinnon and Andy Samberg.  The regurgitation of the 1989  movie is getting a 2024 makeover (or "re-imagining" in Hollywood speak) with the plot having a more contemporary premise. From what I was able to read about the new plot, it will be about a couple who can't stand each other due to professional jealousy, which results in chaos. WTF is earth shattering about that?  Below are photo stills from production. No word on its release date.  Read More Benedict Cumberbatch filming a scene for War of the Roses. OPEN POST: Mexican Mariachis, Firebreather and Stephen Seagull

Image
It's a well-known fact in Mexico that Mariachi bands, with their guitars and comically large hats, are often seen as a mischievous bunch. Their territorial disputes, while not to be taken lightly, are a reflection of the larger societal issues at play. These audacious villains, more brazen than any cartel, launch their attacks in broad daylight, often targeting the innocent or, worse, their rivals. This was a lesson a firebreather learned one sunny day in front of the ironically named Taqueria Infierno in Morelia, just west of Mexico City.  It seemed like the mariachis would get away with violence again, yet they hadn't considered there was something poetic about getting bested in front of a taco place called HELL by a fire-throwing demon, who happened to be a street performer. Early in the altercation, a mariachi was getting the best of the fire thrower, who was initially defenseless, until he remembered his unique talent. Why don't I barbeque this bastard? And like a drag

OPEN POST: Chasing the Cheese; 17th Century British Tradition

Image
Only in the UK would people risk life and limb to chase a rolling round of cheese down a hill like daredevil banshees without caring one bit about cracking their skulls.  Forget all that staid, stiff upper lip business; just stroll down Any Street UK with loads of clubs and bars on a celebratory Friday night, and you will not see Lordly behavior. You will see pink-faced Brits behaving wildly drunk off their arses and being tackled by the police. That is how it looks to this American who has seen drunken throngs on weekend nights in locales across the globe, but they excel in this area. Don't believe me? Okay, then, let's take this cheese-rolling contest. Admittedly, people from all over the world throw their bodies down a bumpy hill to chase a wheel of cheese like the medieval Olympics, not for money or fame, just to say they won as they end up in a broken heap across the finish line. They survived, and that gives you swagger rights. It is a flex y'all. It is clout chasing
