OPEN POST: June Squibb and ScarJo at TIFF

Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Here are June Squibb and Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival last night. 95-year old Squibb stars in Johansson's directorial debut,  Eleanor the Great.   The film is about a nonagenarian named Eleanor who decides to make the move from Florida to New York after the death of her best friend, Bessie. In a bid to meet new people, Eleanor finds herself in a support group for Holocaust survivors. She passes her late best friend's survival story off as her own, and garners the attention of a 19-year old journalism student who wants to write a piece on Eleanor. The two begin to form a close bond, but how long before the truth comes out? The movie has received mixed reviews, with Variety writer Owen Gleiberman calling it an "unconvincing crowd pleaser." Letterboxd reviewers praised Squibb's performance but found the film to be "pedestrian."  Are there any films from TIFF that have piqued ...

CELEBRATE, BITCHES: It's National Vanilla Cupcake Day! Or What's "Good Vanilla" And "Bad Vanilla?"

Image
Did you know? It's National Vanilla Cupcake Day! Crazy, right? What ghey do they tie up in a backroom and force to come up with these holidays? And what, you ask, does Britney have to do with this (beyond being a "Hi'ya!" to Madame Fleur, our resident Brit-Brit expert)? Thanks for asking! You see, the very idea of vanilla got me to thinking:  What's Good Vanilla and Bad Vanilla? For example, I think we can all agree that in her heyday, Britney was Good Vanilla and put out excellent vanilla pop music for the masses. Similarly, I think we can all agree that Chet Haze is Bad Vanilla, and on any day, past or present, puts out bad vanilla rap for the few incels who listen to him.  Below, I've put together two lists that I hope you can add to, if only to lead your fellow Peckers to Good Vanilla things, and help them street clear of the bad.  GOOD VANILLA 1) Britney. For reasons elaborated upon above. 2) Whitney Houston. Don't hate. In the early peak of her caree...

Kissing ScarJo Was "Hell," Says Diversity and Woke Expert Matt Damon!

Image
Wise words + Matt Damon. An oxymoron? Who can say? A few days ago on "LADBible" on YouTube, Matt was chit-chatting with Emily Blunt about McDonalds, Jimmy Fallon and "Oppenheimer," which they both appear in, when the important topic of macking on co-stars came up. Is it sexy? Is it gross? I, for one, was waiting with bated breath, because this is the same Matt Damon who wanted us to know that he'd wisely stopped using homophobic slurs at the tender age of 50 (at the insistence of his grown daughter). Better late than never? But whatever. He's evolving! And as he's sagely noted, this is "the white man's burden. It's a very rarified air." And Harvey Weinstein? He had opinions on that topic, too, noting that the #MeToo movement is causing a culture of "outrage," plus there's a "spectrum" of sexual abuse, he added, the implication being that some of its kinda okay, while some is just plain naughtiness. Obviously he s...
