Lazy girl/boy is the latest trend among younger workers: A commentary

When I read about the latest trend among youngsters on Tik Tok called "lazy girl job" I had to find out more as my first reaction was huh?

Lazy girl job is essentially two things: finding a brag worthy, well paying remote job ($80k +) and then going on social media to brag about being lazy, doing the bare minimum with zero ambition, and encouraging others to do the same. At least this is what its morphed into from the original premise of finding a high paying remote gig and putting in minimal effort to allow time to pursue a life. In some ways it's like quiet quitting.

Bragging about being lazy on the job isn't anything thing new. Since prehistoric times workers have always tried to find ways to slack off when the boss isn't looking. But what's different with today's entitled, everyone gets a participation trophy generation is their braggadocios brazen attitude about it. I know...don't generalize as there are younger workers who bust their ass for a paycheck. I applaud these folks for their work ethic. But in this commentary I'm not referring to them.

From what I read in various articles, part of what's driving the lazy girl/boy job trend (applies to men) for these highly paid remote workers is their inability to tolerate any stress or anxiety that is part of the workplace under the guise of wanting work/life balance. Many of these high paying remote jobs require mental work (customer service, engineers, techy stuff, digital marketing, etc.).

Hey, I get it. Workers have to draw a line in the sand to keep themselves sane on the job and have a life outside of work. For too long companies have used, abused, and treated workers like commodities. But what this younger generation that's out there promoting lazy girl/boy jobs doesn't grasp is every job has stress and anxiety. Even the most mundane work. Bragging publicly about being unambitious and lazy on the job isn't the solution. It's only going to piss off employers who will then fire your ass and yank that cushy remote job...and not just your remote job but for all employees. Companies are already clamping down on hybrid work and this just gives them another reason.

I would tell these "lazy girl & boys" workers this: You have been gifted with a high paying remote gig. Do your job and appreciate the perks of working from home and show a little drive and hustle. If you're not ambitious, that's fine. Don't complain if you get passed for a promotion. Remember, there are others who have it way tougher than you. Go spend the day roofing a house in the middle of summer. Or stand on your feet for 10 hours as a server or working in manufacturing. No job is  perfect and they all have pros and cons. Just don't take pride in being a work sloth while being paid a high salary.
