PECKERWOOD'S WEEKLY LUNOCRACY POST! For the Week of 05/04/2026
American democracy may never recover. This is not hyperbole.
Years ago, when Roberts was about to be appointed to the Supreme Court, Lewis warned us: "Under Roberts, I feel that the leadership of the Court will promote politics over the protection of individual rights and liberties. Roberts may be a brilliant lawyer, but I wonder whether he can really understand the depth of what it took to get the Voting Rights Act passed. The right to vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democratic society. Roberts's memos reveal him to be hostile towards civil rights, affirmative action and the Voting Rights Act. He has even said that Voting Rights Act violations, and I quote, 'should not be made too easy to prove.'"
There's plenty of blame to go around, but at present, furious Democrats are rightly finger pointing at some of their own. This includes pointing a finger at Bernie Sanders, who argued loudly and repeatedly in 2016 that economic inequality was the lone, fundamental issue in America - and took priority over so-called "identity politics" like race.
Matters got more surreal when conservative political columnists and commentators chimed in this weekend, like Brett Stephens, who - are you ready for this? - said The Voting Rights Act is no longer needed because we live in a "color blind" society, pointing out that "we've had a Black President." I'd laugh, though I'd rather drag types like him to the fiery pits of hell. And pour in gallons of gasoline.
But until the midterms, I guess I'll just have to make do with politely clapping back, as the kids say. Like right here in our own li'l corner of the internet.
What do you think? Did you vote for Clinton and Harris? Or were you swayed by the likes of Bernie and Jill Stein? Do you think there's there any hope left for American democracy?
